Job Description

Kin is seeking a Front End Web Developer to join our enterprise workplace consulting team on a contract-to-hire basis for approximately 20-30 hours per week, with availability to begin immediately. We are a small, distributed, and close-knit team of developers, working 100% remotely throughout the United States. Our new front end developer must be based in the United States, and be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S.

As this is a 100% remote position, candidates will need to have a comfortable, quiet, and distraction-free work environment with a stable internet connection. Candidates are expected to work the same structured daily schedule with our team (regular business hours of 9AM - 5PM Central time).

This position will be working on our Enterprise Workplace Team where we build custom software that helps companies with tens of thousands of employees communicate all the ways employees are compensatedfrom salary, to healthcare, to retirement savings.

Who We're Looking For

You are an experienced front end developer, fluent in building user interfaces for the web. Given a set of visual designs, you are capable of translating that design direction into clean, semantic, standards-compliant front-end code. You are comfortable using dynamic CSS preprocessors such as SASS and LESS, and you structure and build your IU code with responsive and adaptive behaviors in mind, creating a UI that performs well on many different devices, and striving for accessibility.

Front end UI's are rarely static pages, and you are comfortable building user interactions with Javascript, jQuery, Bootstrap.js, Vue.js and other Javascript frameworks. You've written front end logic validate user input and you have experience in managing your front end libraries and dependencies with npm and gulp. Our applications are built on C#/.NET back end. Though you dont need to be fluent in C#, some experience working in Visual Studio and with the .NET Razor view engine it is certainly a plus. You will also need working knowledge and experience with consuming RESTful APIs.

In this position, you will be working under the leadership of a senior developer and a project manager. As a front-end developer, your role and responsibilities are not only limited to just writing code. You will need to be a great, senior-level, team player, collaborator, and problem solver. Communication is key to our team's success, and you should be comfortable expressing your ideas and needs clearly, both verbally and in writing. Our developers regularly work and communicate closely with a diverse group of contacts on our client side, and must be able to explain technical concepts to non-technical people thoughtfully. Since our team is all remote, we use Slack, Basecamp, and video chats throughout the day, to stay connected.

In the front end web developer role, here are some things you might do in a typical week:

    Be responsible for 2-3 projects at a time, with the ability to switch gears between tasksLearn and make improvements to a legacy front end codebase/UIInvestigate and resolve 10-20 reported UI layout issues and bugsCreate new HTML and CSS markup from scratch, for a UI based on some provided visual layouts or wireframesTranslate existing markup and styles to a new feature being added to a UIWrite front end code to implement a dynamic IU component or user interactionCreate or help make adjustments to a HTML email templateProvide well-written messages to a client to answer questions, request info, or give a status update on a particular featureHelp a client with some markup questions in the CMSWork with a project manager to estimate the front end development tasks for a new project or featureGather business and domain knowledge of how benefits and retirement plans work, as you implement features for a clientAssist with scheduled code migrations and deployments, ensuring that front end changes deploy successfully in each release


Our front end web developers have experience in the following, in order of how often youll be using these languages and tools:

    HTML, CSS, and dynamic CSS processors such as LESS and SASSResponsive and adaptive design and coding techniques, to support multiple devices or viewportsFront end scripting with Javascript, jQuery, Bootstrap.js, Vue.js, and similar JS librariesDependency management with NPM and GulpExperience building view templates for .NET MVC applications and the Razor view engine is a big plusFamiliarity working in an integrated development environment (IDE) like Visual StudioExperience with creating HTML email templates and emailing services such as Campaign Monitor and Postmark is a big plusExperience using Browserstack or another multi browser testing platformExcellent written and verbal communication skills and equally comfortable communicating with the client our our internal teamStrong problem-solving skills and curiosity to seek out problems and fix themDedicated to testing your workDedicated to documenting your code and keeping your projects organizedA comfortable, quiet, and distraction-free work environment with a stable internet connectionWillingness to work 9-5 pm CT, Monday-Friday
