As a software engineer on the VADER Skywalker team, you will be working with highly skilled engineers who are responsible for the systems we develop, through the entire product life cycle, from requirements to deployment to operations support. We develop, test, deploy, and operate our software and systems. We are a team that thrives on big challenges, results, quality, and agility.

You will work on an Agile DevOps team supporting development, QA, operations, scrum, product ownership, systems and software support; and all other functional responsibilities for a product/project. As a Software engineer you will interact with team members, product owners, business partners, tier 1 or 2 operations, finance, and other Comcast business partners.

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of software platforms and services. Services include support for Video Ingest, Metadata Transformation, Dynamic Ad Insertion, Monitoring, Video Transcode, Video Analysis, and others.

What are some interesting problems you'll be working on?

  • Automation workflow process, operational support process, test, data collection and interpretation.
  • Defining, implementing, and interpreting of meaningful metrics and proposing the improvement opportunities.
  • Distributed database design.
  • Improving customer experience proactively.
  • Providing system architecture and solutions which span web service offerings.
  • Designing, implementing, and supporting utilities which reduces various operational costs.

In your role, you will have the full responsibility of systems from developing/testing to deploying/support. You may be developing and testing a web UI, middle tier, and/or backend code, deploying the code in production, troubleshooting production issues, and developing scripts and utilities to automate data collection, interpretation of the collected data, and a resolution where possible.

You'll be working with the best and brightest minds in Comcast to roll out the video delivery infrastructure that will power the next generation of television. Success in this role is characterized by quicker speed to market, high quality, and very few customer-facing defects and outages.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with other members of cross-functional teams, third party vendors, and company product mangers and marketing teams to deliver quality products in a timely fashion that meet defined requirements
  • Ensure that project requests are properly accepted into the DevOps engineering team, worked on in a timely and efficient manner, are of high quality, and smoothly going the DevOps life cycle continuous innovation, feedback, and improvement
  • Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend complete solutions based on best practices and proven technologies
  • Participate in Company product lifecycle process. Contribute to and/or create product and technical requirements, detailed design documents including transaction, capacity and bandwidth models, systems definitions, and operational procedures as part of this process
  • Solves complex problems. Takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions
  • Is diligent about recording/documenting development and production support activities and tasks in Rally or other tools
  • Deploys new systems and software including appropriate testing to ensure successful deployment. Determine the necessary test coverage and plan for deployment strategy
  • Continuously improve DevOps process for faster cycle times, higher quality, and improved customer experience
  • Train or mentor other junior or peer engineers
  • Train tier 1 or 2 operations and provide appropriate documents as needed

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with a variety of scripting languages including PERL, Unix Shell, Groovy, and JavaScript
  • Experience with Java, Spring, and Maven
  • Working experience with web applications
  • Virtualization/cloud experience (VMware or OpenStack)
  • Understanding on how to scale applications depending on load
  • Experience with web application development including HTML5, CSS, and JS integration
  • Ability to navigate Linux operating systems
  • Excellent troubleshooting skill for network, Linux, and application issues
  • Working experience with DataStax/Cassandra or other NoSQL database
  • Willing to take ownership of problems and see them through to resolution
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced agile environment. Requirements change quickly and our team needs to constantly adapt to moving targets.
  • Experience with build/deployment automation
  • Experience Java test automation (JUnit, Mockito)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer Science or Engineering Degree.
  • 1-3 years of software development experience
  • Good communicator and able to clearly articulate complex issues and technologies
  • Great design and problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated, team player, action and results oriented
